How to Use Increases in Crochet Projects

Crochet increases are a technique that add shape to crochet stitches. An increase is two (or more) stitches (or chains into the chain, space or stitch below). You might see the abbreviation inc. for increases in a pattern. Increases can be used with any stitch and is an inherent part of crocheting in the round.

In the example below, using two single crochets in each foundation chain creates a spiral shape. This is fun to use for tassels or hair on dolls.
